Nothing But The Blues

Nuthin' But The Blues

"Nothing But The Blues" - DVD

Filmed by director Martin Scorcese, this documentary was broadcast once on PBS stations, but never officially released for reasons which remain unclear. A planned release on home video was slated for early summer 1995, and Warner/Reprise produced a limited number of advance copies to be used for promotion. The promotional copies have both a test pattern and the Warner/Reprise logo before the program material (see below), unlike the version shown on PBS. These promo copies also feature a blistering electric performance of "Driftin" not shown on the PBS release. DVD-R sourced directly from master promo copy. This, remastered version replaces the mono soundtrack of the promotional VHS with the pristine stereo audio mastered for radio broadcast. Audio remastering and sync by Button productions, new menus and authoring by Geetarz, and new title menu by the wonderful Joey Jay. Scrap your earlier versions, this one blows 'em all away! DVD-R1 with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio.

Well - short but precise... This DVD is fantastic - pure blues, and Eric really gets off. Nice and informal and very good quality. Also good interviews. A must have in your selection. One of the best I have!

From the Cradle is one of my favourite EC albums not least because of the "recorded as it happened" ( minimal overdubs )format and its blues content. IMHO Eric is at his best live ( even some of his less exciting studio albums have been revitalised on the subsequent tours ) and playing the blues. A DVD of him performing the album and associated numbers is therefore to be cherished. I had heard of this DVD on the grapevine but had some reservation about tracking it down-if it was a film by someone as reputable as Scorcese but had not been officially released or had been withdrawn what was wrong with it? Was Eric under par or had he refused to sanction it? Were these indicators that the performance/format was poorer than some of the official releases which were not always great and which EC & his management had seemingly approved. Would I be disappointed? Then I found it here-but no reviews -was it worth it? -would I take the plunge? I shouldn't have hesitated and deprived myself of savouring this performance earlier than I did. EC is on top form and cooking it up every bit as much as on the 2004 tour and the recent Cream reunion and its all blues with the added benefit of the EC interviews. In many ways it seems to have been a prototype for the "Sessions for Robert J" DVD. It has also been sampled by one of the contributors on the Cream 2005 Reunion site to almost universal acclaim. If you liked Robert J you'll positively adore this one. If you haven't got it do yourself a big favour and get it now - you wont regret it.
