At first hearing I thought this performance sounded uninspired and sluggish - possibly because Eric (and maybe the band) is pretty inebriated! But after repeated listening it has grown on me and I think it is an excellent concert - laid back yes but not catatonic. Eric musters some real fire on the slow blues and the recording is quite atmospheric (the sound keeps bouncing off the back of wall in the concert-hall and the audience is enthusiastic). The band lays down a solid groove throughout - I particularly love the funky first section of 'Steady Rolling Man' (why didn't Bill Levenson include a 1970's take of this great cover on 'Crossroads 2'?) Yvonne Elliman does a fine version of 'Cant Find My way Home' which luckily makes up for Marcy Levey's awful song. |
