Soul Mates 2
"Soul Mates 2" - Mid Valley 25/26 - AUD 3
Recorded at Curtis Nixon Hall, Tampa, Florida on December 1, 1970
Note: This show is of historical importance, as it is apparently the only existent live performance with Duane Allman on guitar. better quality, and more complete than Live at Tampa. In addition, it appears to be a remastered / modified version, as brought to my attention:
This disc sounds much different than Soul Mates. The parts of Layla where you can hear people in the crowd talking are gone, but there is a bit of background hiss, and there isn't any on SM1. So I went and dug up Live at Tampa, and made an astonishing discovery....SM2 is a cleaned up version of the better source tape!!! It still has a bit of the hiss present on Live at Tampa, but is much more listenable.

This is very hard to hear. You never really hear the drums and Duane's guitar playing becomes non-existent whenever Eric plays lead. But the album does come together at certain times, The guitar interplay in "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad" is great to hear, a great version of "Got to Get Better in a Little While" and a long Allman Brothers like version of "Let it Rain." You probably will have your doubts the first time you hear it, but if you listen carefully to the music, you'll find this to be quite a tape. As I was Listening to the album more, I heard one track that I really liked, "Have You Ever Loved a Woman." You can really hear the guitars on this track starting during the solos with Eric for two times and then Duane for two solos, and then they trade off each other. This is definitely what I bought this album for, to hear the magic of Eric and Duane on stage! |
